Dermabrasion helps to remove small facial furrows (around lips), acne scars, tattoos and some types of pigmentation and some types of scars, after the cosmetic surgeon and dermatologist have recommended it.
Mechanical dermabrasion is the process of mechanical grinding and polishing the skin with a high-speed diamante grinder.
The entire face can be treated at once or a specific area only, either on face or other body parts, depending on the medical condition being treated. On the 3rd day after the treatment the epidermis regeneration begins (regeneration of the outer skin layer). For then days after the procedure, the skin is swollen and red. It usually takes several weeks and sometimes up to several months for the skin to regain its normal appearance and colour.
This aesthetic surgery procedure is performed under enhanced local anaesthesia, and it is therefore painless.
Mechanical dermabrasion is mostly used in cases of acne scarring. To avoid the possible skin infection, it is important to make sure the acne is not inflammatory before the procedure. This means, if patient’s acne is inflammatory, we recommend dermatological treatment of the acne, which sometimes lasts three to six months, in order to prepare the patient for the procedure.
One of the big advantages of mechanical dermabrasion is that after the treatment, the acne is not very active. Therefore, the effect of the dermabrasion is rewarding – the acne scarring is removed and made the least visible and the appearance of new acne is minimized.
As the skin is quite sensitive after the dermabrasion, our patients are advised not to expose the treated areas to sun, for three months following the operation. To make sure the results won’t be compromised, we perform dermabrasion only in fall and winter time.
Mechanical dermabrasion is also used for removing the fine lines in the upper and lower lip area, which can appear at middle aged or older people.
We often combine dermabrasion with other procedures with the purpose of rejuvenation, for example with face lift, forehead lift, upper and lower eyelid correction, and other cosmetic surgery procedures.
USEFUL INSTRUCTIONS FOR OUR PATIENTS
Prior to the operation – patient’s preparation:
Although mechanical dermabrasion is preformed regularly in our clinic, the professionalism of our surgical team headed by Dr Toncic makes us pay special attention to the preoperative preparation of our patient.
- Prior to the dermabrasion, the patient goes through a routine preoperative analysis, which comprises the medical examination in our clinic and a blood test analysis.
- We have a special arrangement with our foreign patients. Prior to the procedure and preoperative examination, we hold consultation through emails, photos and by phone. This way, our surgeons get a deeper insight into the individual case, according to which they can estimate whether the patient is a suitable candidate for the desired procedure. This procedure allows our patient to come to Zagreb for the operation one time only. When our patient arrives, we hold final preoperative consultation and medical examination (including blood test), where we discuss the details of the operation together with the patient. After the consultation, we perform the surgery.
Anaesthesia and the procedure:
- Mechanical dermabrasion is done under enhanced local anaesthesia and the complete procedure is painless.
- The patient stays in the clinic for several hours. It takes about an hour for preoperative preparations, and one hour for the operation itself after which the patient rests. Once discharged from the surgery the patient is sent to home care.
Postoperative period and recovery:
- The final result of the operation depends on the course of the operation, the experience of the surgeon and his team, but to a significant extent, it also depends on conscientious and detailed postoperative monitoring and control.
- To be sure of the success of the operation and wellbeing of the patient, Dr Toncic and his team insist on regular check ups and everyday contact with the patient.
- For our patients’ safety, successful recovery and postoperative monitoring, we recommend optimal length of stay in Zagreb. This way, we leave nothing to chance. We monitor our patient’s recovery completely, which is crucial for our patient’s health and the result of the operation.
- Postoperative recovery after mechanical dermabrasion is individual, usually lasting around 14 days after the procedure. After that, the patients can resume their personal and professional everyday activities.
- After dermabrasion, we strictly advise our patients to avoid exposure to the sun of the treated area for three months after the procedure, because of the possible damaging effects. Therefore, mechanical dermabrasion is a procedure that we perform only during fall and winter, when the damaging sun effect is minimised.
Required stay in Zagreb:
- Required stay in Zagreb is at least 5 days, so we can monitor the early postoperative period completely. We indeed require that our patients stay in Zagreb after mechanical dermabrasion for the optimal time, as this period is of crucial importance for our patient’s health and for the result of the procedure. Having followed all the instructions, our patient can safely go home without risking the possible postoperative complications.
- Sick leave lasts 14 days for facelift surgery. 14 days after home care and recovery, the patients can resume their personal and professional activities.
